Revenge is Here!

#RIVALRYWEEK as promoted by MLS on Facebook 3/16/2013

Revenge is Here to help sell you on the MLS.  Is this how we sell soccer to America? YES!

Above is an image pulled from Facebook before the opening weekend of the 2013 season.  MLS promotes rivalry between “markets” to sell more jerseys, raise stadium attendance and most importantly adding TV-viewership.  The TV deal is the big prize for MLS.

I am all for getting people in stadiums to watch soccer live or tune in at home, but I do not want to watch a game for the sake of seeking revenge on a team or city.  It makes no sense to me, I want to see good soccer.  I want to see great soccer. I want to see moments on the pitch that make me rethink the game.  Not dreaming of a Suarez bite or handball on the line cheating Ghana.  Yes CHEATING Ghana.

When we approach the game from a point of anger and aggression; we are not playing the Beautiful Game.  MLS should promote the Beautiful Game not revenge.  Let’s promote a game where we are talking about amazing goals, not vengence and strategic rule breaking.
