Lupe Fiasco : US Soccer Director of Music

“CHICAGO (May 20, 2014) – U.S. Soccer has named Grammy Award-winning recording artist Lupe Fiasco as the Music Director for the Men’s National Team and artist Futura the Art Director for the Men’s National Team’s 2014 FIFA World Cup campaign.” – US Soccer*

I was surprised US SOCCER needed a Director of Music.  Evidentally they did and it is Lupe Fiasco, which I have no complaints about.  I can still remember the first time I heard the skateboard anthem “Kick Push“, a song that has been on my running playlist forever.  I will admit that “Kick Push” so romanticized skateboarding for me that I went the the skatepark a couple dozen times and learned to ride a bowl and picked up a couple tricks along the way.  Lupe has to be great for soccer, as I am sure he was for skateboarding, especially if he can pin a song to encompass the swelling American passion for the Beautiful Game. Additionally, Lupe’s debut album “Food & Liquor” is a classic that most hip hop heads hold in respect.  So I am excited Lupe is going to make music about US soccer.  Here is the skateboard anthem I love so much, at the halftime of the MLS All star game.. guess we should have seen this relationship coming:

So here we go.  Here are the songs Lupe came up with!

In Chicago, Lupe performed before the USMNT’s first FIFA World Cup match against Ghana, the turnout was huge.  But did you notice anything?  “Mission” has nothing to do with soccer specifically, it is just a song from his upcoming album.   “Mission” is about fighting cancer, which deserves hip youthful swag-filled anthem, but has nothing to do with soccer.  Lupe partnered with Stand up to Cancer promote his  fifth studio album Tetsuo & Youth which will be releases in the summer 2014.

Below is the other song used to hype US Soccer and it is the debut song from Lupe’s upcoming album.  don’t hold your breath, it has nothing to do with soccer either.

US Soccer basically hired a 12-time Grammy Award nominated hype man to polish the musical aspects of the media barrage leading into and during the World Cup in Brasil.  He performed in Chicago June 16 at US Soccer Fan Fest and during Fan Appreciation Day on May 30 in NYC.

Lupe did not pen a new soccer anthem, he sis not even try.  He is just hyping US Soccer, which is cool I guess, but most obviously promoting his upcoming album.

Appointing Lupe Director of Music is an extension of Us Soccer’s attempts at growing soccer in the US, and guess what, they are targeting urban youth and suburban hipster wannabes that use terms like “Swag”. This is demographic US Soccer really wants to lock up, in their attempts to grow the game.   These are the kids that love to play the video game “FIFA” but might not play the beautiful game or even support a domestic side in the US.  These are people who might follow European footy and probably talk trash about the MLS and US Soccer.  You know these people, you might even be one.  And guess what, they missed the mark with Lupe.  This seems like a corporate marriage that bore no children.  They turned watching a soccer game into a cross between a pep rally, a music concert, and  X-Games.  Perhaps this is the future of US footballing culture in the States, but I think they really missed an opportunity to birth something real.  I guess this is why real culture is not manufactured but spawn from the grassroots.

Think I am wrong, go watch a World Cup game with a group of Argentines.  They have many songs about Messi and Maradona and their love of their team and I doubt any were paid for by their soccer federation.  So maybe we need a Messi/Maradona and maybe it is wrong to criticize US Soccer because they did not even try to have Lupe pen and anthem, but I would have been awesome if he had.

Us soccer is developing a culture and it might all be spawn with corporate sponsorship as witnessed with the American Outlaws and their amazing support, organization and sadly

Portland Footballing Community; I salute you.

I have been reading about the Hacienda Futsal pitch (and blogging about it) for over a year. On my most recent trip to Portland to see the second leg of the MLS Western Finals, I finally got to visit this amazing facility.  I woke up early on Saturday and headed up Sandy to 60th before cutting east to: Baltazar Ortiz Community Center.  The Hacienda pitch was amazing.  After juggling and working on my left foot’s shot, I decided to hunt for a pickup game; I really wanted to play.

First, I stopped at an aged field in a fancy neighborhood, the pitch was surrounded by beautiful trees and wonderful morning light, but no one playing footy.

Then, I stopping by a new astro grass field at Grant HS.  One end of the pitch was swarmed by ultimate frisbee players and the other end with two groups of soccer players segregating themselves by age and gender. I talked to both groups and heard about the “cab driver” pickup game at “Madeline”

Madeline Parish School has a nice little astro-grass half-pitch facility (with covered basketball).  I did not plan ahead and ended up playing pick-up in jeans.  This gave me a strategic advantage, because no one takes the white boy in jeans seriously, at least not until he scores twice, dices up some people, and nutmegs another.

I was really impressed with the sportsmanship and the skill of the pick-up players.  There were way to many people playing for the game to be constructive, but most pick-up showcases individuals skill and creativity in tight spaces… this game was no exception.  I saw some really slick foot-skills; the game helped me see the game in a slightly new way, and I have a new skill to practice.

Though I have barely been able to scratch the surface, I can tell Portland has an amazing Footballing Community.  It is probably fractured and self segregating at times, like most FCs, but the game is played by the people all over the city.

SUNDAY:

I will be honest, a two goal lead is nothing in Football, long howled as “the most dangerous lead” by color commentators; I was not worried about the historic comeback I traveled to experience.  I have played in thousands of games and know that a team, when completely focused and dedicated to the win, has the ability to make amazing things happen, especially in the playoffs, and especially with home field advantage.  Plus,  I know how hard it is to repeatedly beat a team, and RSL had the distinct disadvantage of having to handle the Timbers one last time, in front of the Timbers Army, with the most dangerous lead in footy.

I found a pre-game tifo a little humble, but the general attitude of the city was one of resolved destiny, which really surprised me.  I saw the comeback.. 3-1 Timbers regular time win forcing a scoreless OT, then the Timbers winning in dramatic fashion in PKs.  My dream was thwarted as the Timbers fell with fight in their hearts and skill in their game.

I had a great time at the game and was glad to bring the season to a resolution in person at Jeld-Wen.  2012-2013 was an amazing season for the Portland Timbers and it was a venue for me to experience a little slice of Portland’s Footballing Community.

I see the below video as a prime example of the pride and passion the Portland Footballing Community has for the Portland Timbers.  The Timbers Army‘s love and dedication to the PTFC is a shining example of Footballing Community in the MLS.

I am happy to find out the Timbers Army, through Operation Pitch Invasion , has a field initiative that will benefit another neighborhood in the city, much alike the Hacienda futsal pitch.

NewColumbia

“The New Columbia community is home to nearly 1,200 kids from 22 countries speaking more than 11 different languages and we see Bless Field as a place where all of these kids can share the common language that is the beautiful game. Bless Field is designed to support AC Portland sponsored work through nearby Rosa Parks Elementary School and after-school programs through the Regence Boys & Girls Club.” (http://pitch-invasion.org/blessfield/)

Promise that the Portland Footballing Community will grow stronger and Football in the US is moving to the next level.

Robbie Rogers is gay: Let’s get back to Footy!

I am happy with how the MLS/ESPN/American FC* addressed Robbie Rogers being the first publicly out gay professional athlete in North America.

As much as I have been bothered by soccer coverage/commentary in the past, true professionalism and humanism was exuded by everyone involved with the Robbie Rogers story.

Thank You Robbie Rogers and Portland’s LGBT FC* for having a conversation that ultimately led to Robbie returning to the Beautiful Game.

TA-tifo

Kudos to the Timbers Army and other MLS supporters that ushered in this monumentally minor acceptance of basic humanity to the MLS FC*.
